Accelerated Reader

Turn the books your child already reads into measurable reading progress.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading comprehension and progress-monitoring program that helps make independent reading more motivating. Students read books they choose, take short comprehension quizzes, earn points, and work toward personalized reading goals.

Parents can monitor comprehension, quiz performance, reading activity, and progress over time—all from home.

Important: Accelerated Reader includes quizzes and progress-tracking tools, but it does not include a digital book library. Students may read books from home, the library, or a digital reading service.

📚 Need digital books too? Add myON Digital Library or choose our AR + myON bundle for books + quizzes + progress tracking.

Why Homeschool Families Love Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader helps turn everyday reading into measurable progress. After reading a book, students can take a short comprehension quiz, earn points, and work toward personalized reading goals.

With AR, families can:

⭐ Check comprehension after a child finishes a book
⭐ Motivate reading with points and personalized goals
⭐ Track reading activity and quiz performance over time
⭐ Encourage independent reading while allowing children to choose books that interest them
⭐ Document reading progress with helpful reports

Getting Started:
Star Reading Test + AR = Better Together

Before your child begins using Accelerated Reader, we highly recommend taking the Star Reading test. This short, adaptive assessment helps identify your child's current reading level and provides a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) to help guide them toward books that are appropriately challenging.

When Star Reading and Accelerated Reader are used together, families have a more personalized way to choose books, set reading goals, and monitor progress over time.

What Star Reading helps you do:

✦ Identify your child's current reading level
✦ Establish an appropriate ZPD/reading range for choosing “just-right” books
✦ Set more personalized AR reading goals
✦ Monitor reading growth over time
✦ Take the guesswork out of choosing appropriately leveled books

Already use i-Ready or Exact Path?
No problem! Your child can still use Accelerated Reader without taking the Star Reading Test. You can provide us with your child's ATOS or Lexile reading range, and we can manually configure their AR reading range.

How AR Works

01

Your child reads books (print or digital) at their own pace and level.

02

After finishing each book, they take a short quiz that checks their comprehension.

03

Quizzes are available for thousands of titles.

04

Students earn points for successfully completing quizzes. AR tracks reading activity, quiz accuracy, and progress over time.

05

Parents receive reports that make it easy to monitor reading habits, comprehension, and goal-achievement.

06

AR does not include a digital book library. Students can read books they already own, borrow from the library, or use another source.

Want digital books included? Add myON for access to thousands of digital books that can be used alongside Accelerated Reader.
