Star Assessments
Star Assessments are short, computer-adaptive tests used in reading and math to show parents where their child is learning well and where they could use extra help. The questions will adjust depending on how your child answers: if the student gets something right, the next question may be harder; if they miss something, it becomes easier. This means that parents get a clearer picture of ability in a shorter amount of time. Star Assessments are not pass/fail tests.
What do they measure?
For different age/grade levels, STAR looks at things like:
-
Early Literacy (for Pre-K-2nd grade): letter sounds, recognizing letters, phonics, vocabulary, phonemic awareness (sounds), and skills needed to become fluent readers.
-
Reading (for K-12th grade): comprehension, vocabulary, understanding what’s read (stories or informational text), and using reading strategies.
-
Math (for K-12th grade): number operations, problem solving, understanding mathematical concepts, and more.

Estimated Total Active Testing Time by Grade Level Per Subject:
01
Pre-K - 2nd Grade
15 minutes
02
3rd - 5th Grade
15-30 minutes
03
6th - 12th Grade

Star assessments are short and usually take only 15-30 minutes to complete. If needed, you may pause a test or stop/save. If you have a child who needs accommodations, please contact us for more assistance.

How It Works
This test is a short, computer-adaptive test designed to assess your child’s academic abilities. Unlike traditional exams, it doesn’t have a simple pass or fail outcome. Instead, it uses a sophisticated algorithm to adjust the difficulty of each question based on your child's answers, creating a personalized assessment experience. When a question is answered correctly, the next one becomes more challenging. If answered incorrectly, the difficulty level decreases. This adaptive process continues throughout the test to provide a clear picture of your child’s strengths and areas for growth, based on grade-level state and national standards.
Please understand and explain to your child that this test is designed to challenge their knowledge. Understanding how the test works will help them stay focused and not get discouraged by difficult questions.
After completing the test, you’ll receive valuable data that provides a detailed overview of your child’s academic performance. This information will highlight areas where they excel and identify what they still need to learn, offering a roadmap for future academic growth—both at their current grade level and beyond.
Pre-K - 2nd graders who do not know how to read on their own yet should take the Star Early Literacy Assessment. For students who are K - 12th grade and know how to read on their own, they should take the Star Reading and Math Assessments. Students at any grade level who are not able to read independently may take the Star Early Literacy Assessment.

When should my child take this test?
We recommend having your child take this test 3 times throughout the school year—at the beginning, middle, and end. This will allow you to track their growth and progress, ensuring they stay on track and meet their academic goals for the year.

How soon can I receive my child's test results?
You will receive your child’s test results by email shortly after completion—usually within 30 minutes. When you select “Yes” to receive results by email on the order form, you are giving us permission to enroll your email address in Renaissance's Home Connect. This allows test results to be sent to you automatically as soon as your child finishes testing. Please double-check that your email address is entered correctly during checkout to ensure timely delivery of your child’s results.
