Star Assessments are designed to be quick and efficient. Each assessment includes 34 questions or fewer and typically takes only about 10–30 minutes to complete, depending on the assessment and your child's pace.
That means valuable information about your child's academic progress—without spending hours testing.
Star Assessments
Star Assessments are short, computer-adaptive tests that help parents understand what their child knows and where additional learning may be helpful. Star offers assessments in Reading, Math, and Early Literacy.
The questions adapt to your child's responses--becoming more challenging when answers are correct and adjusting when a student needs additional support. This provides a valuable picture of your child's current skills in a relatively short amount of testing time.
Star Assessments are not pass/fail tests. They can be used to meet PEP Scholarship annual assessment requirements or to monitor academic progress throughout the school year.

What Do They Measure?
For different age/grade levels, STAR looks at things like:
Star Early Literacy
(for Beginning & Emerging Readers)
Measures early reading skills including letter recognition, letter sounds, phonics, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and early numeracy/basic math concepts. Star Early Literacy is designed for beginning and emerging readers and provides a broad picture of the foundational skills children need as they develop academically. Star Early Literacy is also used as part of Florida's FAST assessment system in the early grades in public schools.
➕ Yes, Early Literacy includes some basic math! Star Early Literacy includes early numeracy and foundational math skills, but it does not replace the separate Star Math assessment for families who want a full math assessment.

Star Assessments are short and typically take only 10-30 minutes per subject. Tests may be paused if needed, but once an assessment is started, it must be completed within 7 days.
Detailed testing instructions and best practices will be emailed with your student's login information. If your child needs testing accommodations, please contact us for assistance before testing.

Measure Growth Throughout the School Year
For progress monitoring, we recommend testing three times—at the beginning, middle, and end of your school year.

Beginning
Establish a Baseline
See where your child is starting academically. Use the results to identify strengths, areas that may need additional attention, and learning goals for the year.

Middle
Measure Progress
Test again around the middle of your school year to see how your child is progressing. Compare results with the beginning-of-year assessment an use the information to help guide instruction for the remainder of the year.

End
Measure Growth
Complete a final assessment near the end of your school year to measure overall academic growth and compare results across the year.
For PEP Scholarship students, families may use the appropriate end-of-year Star assessment results to meet the annual testing requirement.
